A new milestone: Rotablation for complex cardiac cases is here

Today marked Mulgrave Private Hospital's first two cases using Rotablation technology (rotational atherectomy) for the interventional treatment of patients with complex heavily calcified coronary arteries, performed by Dr Ali Safaa.

Mulgrave Private Hospital now proudly offers Rotablation technology, enabling us to treat complex cardiac cases in which patients have heavily calcified coronary arteries, with a minimally invasive approach.

Dr Ali Safaa of Genesis Care in collaboration with Mulgrave Private Hospital, Medtronic and Boston Scientific has enabled patients to be treated with this modern, specialised equipment.

The Boston Scientific Rotablator™ (Rotational Atherectomy System), is recognised by physicians as an optimal device to modify calcific coronary lesions in coronary arteries to enable proper stent implantation and better long term patient outcomes.

Prior to Mulgrave Private Hospital introducing Boston Scientific's rotablation technology, patients with these conditions would have been transferred to another hospital for ongoing treatment, or commonly require open heart surgery.

With this minimally invasive rotablation equipment, combined with stenting, Dr Safaa is able to deliver to his patients a faster post procedure recovery time and earlier return to normal daily activities.

Patients are able to avoid a sternotomy, therefore a less visible scar, less impact on breathing, less limitation of use of the right arm and shoulder, and faster return to usual activity and work.

Dr Safaa is delighted with the patient outcomes post rotablation procedures today, reporting in both cases;

Today, our first two rotablation cases at Mulgrave Private Hospital were a great success, with both patients receiving two stents. Both are recovering well and expected to return home tomorrow.
