Mulgrave Private Emergency Department delivers 24 hour emergency services.
Our Emergency Department is staffed with a skilled team of emergency physicians and nurses here to provide urgent, quality care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Our emergency specialist physicians have undertaken specialist training with the Australian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM) to become experts in their field.

We accept acute medical and most surgical patients for:
- Surgical emergencies
- Medical and cardiac emergencies
- Gynaecology Emergencies
- Orthopaedic injuries
- Sporting injuries / musculoskeletal complaints
Emergency Department patients also have 24 hour access to:
- Pathology services
- Radiology services
- On- call Specialists
- Intensive Care Unit with 24/7 support
- Operating theatres
- Cardiac catheterisation lab with 24/7 STEMI Program
Our Emergency Department is unable to accept patients with:
- Major trauma/ head injury Acute stroke
- Psychiatric conditions
- Major burns
- Obstetric emergencies/ women > 20 weeks gestation
How much will Emergency visit cost?
A $420 doctor fee will be charged for your attendance at our private Emergency Department for patients with a valid Medicare card. This includes WorkCover and TAC patients. Non-Medicare card holders will be charged $650.
Xray, CT and Ultrasound scanning for patients while in Emergency (that are not admitted), will be bulk billed and you will not incur out of pocket expenses for these services.
Outside of this consultation fee, any additional costs associated with pathology and specialist doctor consultations may be partially reimbursed by Medicare.
Medibank has launched two new Silver hospital products on 15th June 2023, which include a Private Emergency Department Benefit
- Medibank Silver Plus Support - $300 annual limit per membership per calendar year
- Medibank Silver Plus Secure - $400 annual limit per membership per calendar year
Unfortunately, not all private health insurers or policies have reimbursement the emergency doctor's consultation fee, please check your level of cover with your insurer.
Accounts are to be settled on the day of treatment.
Department of Veteran Affairs
We are a Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) provider and have the ability to process DVA accounts. There are no medical treatment out of pocket expenses for DVA patients.
How long can I expect to wait?
Patients are seen in order of medical urgency with minimal delay to ensure the best medical outcome. Most patients will be seen within minutes, if not immediately upon arrival.
Appointments and referrals are not necessary. You can present yourself, come recommended by your GP or arrive via ambulance.
Parking
The Emergency Department has an easily accessible dedicated entrance located via the second entrance off Blanton Drive, with its own 5 minute parking for patient drop off and separate Ambulance bays.
Once patients are dropped off, there are ample parking facilities within the hospital grounds. Parking fees apply.
What happens after your consultation?
Following assessment by an emergency doctor, if you require treatment or surgery you may be admitted as an in-patient to Mulgrave Private Hospital or South Eastern Private Hospital (specialising in rehabilitation and mental health). If you are well enough to return home our treatment notes will be sent to your GP.
